U.S. Marine Corps 1st Lt. Brett O’Connell rappels from a building with Sgt. Kai Kalamau as his belayer during a Helicopter Rope Suspension Techniques Master Course on Marine Corps Base Hawaii, Dec. 6, 2023. The course was led by HRST Master Instructors with III Expeditionary Operations Training Group, based in Okinawa, Japan, who travelled to Hawaii to certify Marines with 3d Littoral Combat Team as HRST Masters. With the certification, HRST Masters can train Marines to safely and effectively perform helicopter insertions and extractions, rappels, and other rope techniques. O’Connell, a native of Boston, is an infantry platoon commander, and Kalamau, a native of Waianae, Hawaii, is an infantry rifleman, both with 3d LCT, 3d Marine Littoral Regiment, 3d Marine Division.
