Sergeant Major Kyle D. Baker was born in 1984 in Hornell, New York. In January, 2003 he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and attended Recruit Training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot-Parris Island, South Carolina. Upon graduation from his initial training, he reported to Marine Combat Training at Camp Geiger, North Carolina. In November 2003, Private First Class Baker reported to Marine Barracks, 8th & I for ceremonial duty with "The Commandant's Own".
In 2012, he performed a lateral-move to PMOS 0681 and received orders to Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. Upon arrival at 2d Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, Staff Sergeant Baker began on-the-job training before reporting to the II Marine Expeditionary Force Communications Security Management Course of Instruction. While serving with 2d LAR, he served as Battalion Communications Security Chief and Communications Platoon Sergeant. He graduated from the Staff Noncommissioned Officers Career Course aboard Camp Lejeune in December 2013.
In January 2014, Staff Sergeant Baker deployed as an augment with Special Purpose Marine Air-Ground Task Force - Africa in support of Marine Forces Europe/Africa. He served as the Task Force Communications Security Chief, as well as the Communications Platoon Sergeant. He was then appointed as the acting Command Element First Sergeant and oversaw the tactical employment of over 180 Marines operating in 8 countries across 2 continents. Staff Sergeant Baker then took part in Operation Oaken Lotus and the military assisted evacuation of the US Embassy in Tripoli, Libya. Upon returning to CONUS, Staff Sergeant Baker received orders to 8th Marine Regiment. He assumed his duties as Regimental Communications Security Chief and was quickly appointed as Communications Platoon Sergeant and then H&S Company Gunnery Sergeant.
In January 2016, Staff Sergeant Baker deployed with 8th Marines in support of Special Purpose Marine-Air Ground Task Force - Crisis Response. During the deployment, he served as the MAGTF Liaison Officer/Camp Lemonnier, Djibouti and assisted operations in Uganda as a Capabilities Specialist in support of DEVGRU. Later that year, Staff Sergeant Baker returned to North Carolina and received orders to Inspector-Instructor duty in Alameda, California.
Upon reporting to 4th Force Reconnaissance Company, Staff Sergeant Baker assumed his roles as Communications Security Chief, as well as Intelligence Oversight Officer, Security Manager, and Company Gunnery Sergeant. In July 2017, he attained the rank of Gunnery Sergeant and reported to Army Airborne School in Fort Benning, Georgia where he earned his parachutist insignia. He later served as I&I First Sergeant and also filled the empty role of SMCR Sergeant Major. In April 2018, he attended the HQMC Security Management Course.
In January 2019, Gunnery Sergeant Baker reported to Marine Security Guard School, Quantico Virginia for the Detachment
Commander Course where he graduated as Top Gun and Class Commander. Upon graduation, he received orders to the American Embassy in Singapore where he executed a successful tour as the Detachment Commander. Upon completion of his assignment in Singapore, Gunnery Sergeant Baker was hand-selected to serve as an Instructor/Advisor at MSG School, where he trained and prepared future Watchstanders and Detachment Commanders for duty at diplomatic facilities around the globe.
In November 2020, Gunnery Sergeant Baker was selected for promotion to First Sergeant and received orders to MCESG, Region 3, Bangkok Thailand to serve as the Unit Senior Enlisted Leader. While stationed at the American Embassy in Bangkok, First Sergeant Baker oversaw the administrative and operational control of 22 Marine Security Guard Detachments stationed at diplomatic facilities in 17 countries across the East Asia & Pacific area of operations. First Sergeant Baker ensured the Marines of Region 3 remained focused on protecting classified information and diplomatic personnel abroad despite the turmoil caused by civil unrest, terrorist threats, hostile intelligence agency risks, and the COVID 19 pandemic.
In May 2024, First Sergeant Baker executed PCS orders to H&S Company, 3d Littoral Combat Team stationed on Marine Corps Base Hawaii for duty as the Unit Senior Enlisted Leader. During his assignment with 3d LCT, First Sergeant Baker oversaw the professional development of over 450 Marines and Sailors supporting the battalion and 3d Marine Littoral Regiment operations in the Hawaiian island chain, the Philippines, and Taiwan. First Sergeant Baker was selected to the rank of Sergeant Major in November 2024 and executed PCA orders to the 3d Littoral Anti-Air Battalion for duty as the Command Senior Enlisted Leader in March 2025.
Sergeant Major Baker's awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, Navy/Marine Corps Commendation Medal with one gold star, Navy/Marine Corps Achievement Medal with two gold stars, and the Department of State Meritorious Honor Award.
